Five hundred reefs off the coast of Dubai

In bright hopes of attracting more undersea life as well as polish up
its platform for marine environment, artificial reefs will be built off
the coast of Dubai.

This project has been taken up by Dubai’s property developers,
Nakheel. While they the company along with many others has pushed
through a rough patch since the meltdown of 2008, the construction of
this project is definitely a positive step towards economic
reaffirmation.

The project is set to include up to 500 reefs made from boulder and
concrete structures. The cost of this design, while expected to be
substantial, has not yet been revealed or perhaps even calculated. The
silver lining is carried through the words of Ali Rashid Lootah,
chairman of Nakheel as he expressed that this project is unlikely to be a
financial burden on the developer.

Aquatic Life

One of the benefits of such a project is that its requirements of raw
materials mainly consists of boulders, rocks and concrete, raw
materials that are mostly in surplus or perhaps reusable.

"We want to do our maximum, our best, to regenerate the marine environment in the whole area of Dubai," Mr Lootah said.

Optimistically, this project aims to not only preserve but to attract aquatic life on a larger scale.
Some planned reef sites could be suitable for commercial fisheries,
though fishing will only be allowed at a fraction of sites so sea life
is not depleted, Lootah said.

Nakheel’s debt and financial restructuring was a long process that
took time and a lot of hard work. However, the company did complete
their restructuring last August.
