An 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Virginia shook much of the Washington D.C. area.

Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol have been evacuated as a result.

The Associated Press reports the earthquake, the center of which was located near Mineral, Va., was felt as far away as New York City and Rhode Island.

Initial reports put the earthquake at magnitude 5.8, but the U.S. Geological Survey has since increased that to 5.9.

The earthquake was 3.7 miles deep.

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck Virginia at about 1:50 p.m. (EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey reported Tuesday. Tremors were felt in New York, Massachusetts, Ohio, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

In New York City, some buildings were evacuated, and residents poured out of apartment buildings. "What happened?!" one young woman, clutching her large black cat, asked as she rushed onto the street. The woman had been in her seventh-floor apartment in Brooklyn when the brick building began shaking and swaying.

The Associated Press said the Pentagon was being evacuated. The quake also interrupted a news conference that was about to be held by the New York district attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., about the dropping of charges against former IMF chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Vance was about to begin speaking to a room full of reporters, on the eighth floor of a building, when the shaking began.

Everyone leaped up and headed for the stairs. "No one really yelled. We were just trying to decipher what then and there what was going on," said a local TV reporter, Luz Plasencia, speaking to NY1, the city's all-news channel. "We just said this is obviously not right. Let's just get out of here."

She said the obvious fear was that the city was being attacked. "All I could think of was I need to get out of here, I need to get outside, praying and hoping nothing would happen when we were in there."

Strong earthquake shakes Ontario, eastern U.S.

WASHINGTON - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the U.S. East Coast and Canada from Virginia to Toronto on Tuesday, shaking buildings and forcing evacuation of the Pentagon and U.S. Capitol.

There were no immediate reports of major damage or injuries from the quake, which the U.S. Geological Survey said was centered in Mineral, Virginia, between Charlottesville and Richmond. It was initially recorded at 5.8 magnitude.

Washington office workers scurried into the streets after the quake, which lasted for about five seconds and sent items crashing to the floor from store and office shelves.

Tremors shook New York City office buildings, prompting evacuations of courthouses, City Hall and halting work at the World Trade Center construction site, officials and witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear if there was any damage or injuries in New York, but fire department and police officials in Dutchess County, north of New York City, reported structural damage to some buildings.

A spokesman for the city transit agency said the quake was felt but declined immediate comment on whether the subway system was affected.

Control towers at John F. Kennedy airport and Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey were also evacuated.

Buildings in Boston were evacuated, while a Reuters witness said the quake was felt as far away as Toronto.
